Less than one week after knocking out Mark ‘The Killer’ Murray, World Boxing Council and Caribbean Boxing Federation Super/Bantamweight champion, Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore has affixed his signature on the dotted lines to engage local Bantamweight champion, Dexter Marques in a 12-round encounter for the latter fighter’s title.
The two are scheduled to face off in the main bout on a card promoted by S&S Promotions at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday June 27.
The promoters have also clinched the middleweight fight between Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes and Lennox ‘Pretty Boy’ Allen, after several postponements for one reason or the other, while Debbie Tyson and Sharon Warde, who were scheduled battle on the ‘Linden Invasion’ but did not, will now square off in a 4-round Catchweight match.
The final bout will witness Shelly ‘The Boom’ Gibson and Pauline London battling over 4 rounds in a heavyweight clash.
The proposed bout between veteran boxer, Wayne Briggs and Kwesi Jones is now in doubt, after Briggs experienced cold feet at the signing ceremony and left the venue. The promoters have since promised to find a replacement for the disappointed Jones.
The boxers all convened at the Avenue of the Republic office of the President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool, to formalise their contracts.
They had scarcely arrived at the venue, when Gilkes started throwing taunts at his opponent. “I am coming out to fight and you know that once I decide to fight what will happen,” he declared. “I am going to beat the living daylights out of him,” Allen responded.
The two engaged in this type of banter for several minutes more, but were interrupted by Pauline London. “I coming fo beat she real bad,” she said of ‘The Boom.’ Gibson was uncharacteristically quite. When probed for a prediction, Gibson simply said, “My fist will do my talking.
Indeed ‘The Boom’ has been doing a lot of talking recently when she dished out a first class licking to Lindener, Shaundel Parks in the last S&S Promotions card at the CASH.
Warde did not travel from her Linden base for the signing so Tyson decided to fight fairly and chose not to pronounce on the bout.
Moore, who recently over-powered Mark Murray on his way to a third round knockout had stated, quite categorically that a fight against Marques was nowhere in his immediate plans. His manager, Carwyn Holland, had supported his stance.
Yesterday, however, Holland defended his turn around saying that it is time that Marques is taught a lesson. “When Leon was the bantamweight champion Dexter took great care to avoid him,” Holland said.
He further explained that Moore decided to move into the super/bantamweight division to ‘give Dexter an opportunity to become a champion,’ Holland raged. “Now listen to that little boy mouthing off about being better than Leon.” He subsequently promised that Marques would receive the whipping of his life ‘just because he is so ungrateful.”
The disparity in experience juts out, as Marques has merely four fights under his belt. Three of them finished inside of the distance. Moore, on the other hand, has an impressive record of 24 fights.
Twenty one of his opponents were not around to hear the final bell. His two losses were against international opponents. Even so, his world title eliminator against Irene Pacheco was riddled with controversy, forcing the intervention of the ruling world body. Despite this impressive resume, Marques remains unimpressed and vows to whip Moore into submission. The fighters opened camp yesterday afternoon at their respective gyms. Allen and Marques would be at the Forgotten Youth Foundation under the tutelage of Joseph Murray, while Jones and Gilkes hone their skills at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Boxing Gym (ALBG) under the guidance of Brian ‘Tommy Hearns’ Baker. London, Tyson, Moore and Gibson would also be at the ALBG, but under the watchful eyes of Lennox ‘Cappel’ Daniels. All of the fighters commence sessions at 14:00hrs weekdays and 10:00hrs on Saturdays.
