The frequent power outages experienced by consumers, are likely to be significantly reduced soon, thanks to the acquisition yesterday of three new generators by Guyana Power and Light Inc.
Acquired at the cost of US$30M, through funding by PETRO-CARIBE, two of the 120 ton Wartsilla 16V generators were transported from the John Fernandes wharf, to the Kingston Power Station while the other should get there by next Sunday.
GPL’s Chief Executive Officer, Bharrat Dindyal, told reporters that his company’s current capacity is meeting the general demand of about 69megahertz with no reserve.
However, with the arrival of the generators, the capacity will be significantly increased.
“We now have 20 megahertz of new and reliable capacity which impact on reliability and availability in Demerara generally,” Dindyal said.
According to the CEO, the generators are more efficient and will be more effective than those currently in use. He said projections put commissioning of the engines at early September, at which time there should be power being put in the grid.
Dindyal predicts that the generators will also reduce GPL’s production cost, through a reduced fuel import bill since each engine generates more than seven megahertz of electricity, while adding reliability to the local power supply system.
In addition, the generators will significantly reduce the company’s use of Diesel, according to Dindyal.
Currently, the CEO says the company’s capacity is short by about five megahertz, resulting in ongoing load shedding. He however mentioned, that there is a Wartsilla generator undergoing maintenance repairs and it should be fully up and running by June 9.
There are ten Wartsilla engines in the current system operating at Kingston and the last engine was imported in 1997.
Dindyal says the intention is to look at another ten megahertz very quickly. His company is also looking at adding two more generators to the lot, in the not distant future.
When asked if the importation of the generators and the reduction in fuel consumption will impact on utility cost to customers, he advised that customers should use energy efficient appliances as “bills are dependent on particular consumption.”
