Cabinet has finally appointed new Rice Assessment Committees in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six, subsequent to requests made by farmers for greater assistance from the Rice
Assessment Committee.
A press statement from the Ministry of Agriculture stated that the committees will expedite the hearing and settlement of land disputes.
The new committees will also be responsible for resolving issues relating to payment of rates by landlords, since most lands are rented to farmers for agricultural activities in Leguan.
In Region Two, the chairperson appointed is Sunil Scarce, while the Agricultural Officer will be Junior Gounga. In Region Three, Wakenaam Island, Bibi Shadick and Olester Warde were appointed, and in Leguan Island, Brijesh Singh was appointed the Agricultural Officer and Bibi Shadick the Chairperson.
Also in Region Three, Right Bank Bonasika, Bibi Shadick again was appointed as the chairperson, while Gavin Gounga will be the agricultural officer. In Region Four, Cecil Sullivan and Naimodeen Hussain have been appointed.
In Region Five, Jaya Manickchand has been appointed the chairperson and Krishna Seulall as agricultural officer. In Region Six, Adrian Anamayah and R. Mangal will serve as the chairperson and agricultural officer respectively.
Over the years, farmers have called for greater involvement in the appointment of persons on the Rice Assessment Committee.
