NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – The Guyana Prison Service continues to give both male and female inmates a fighting chance.
To date, a number of “skill training programmes” were made available to these convicts, in an effort to make their transformation back to society an easy one.
Last week, 30 prisoners graduated from the New Amsterdam Prisons, at Penitentiary Walk, in two disciplines – Cake Decorating and Self-Esteem.
According to Principal Officer 11, Rose Charles, the Cake Decorating course lasted six weeks, while the other ran for three months.
The sessions, which were conducted between October 2008 and January this year, consisted of both practical and theoretical lessons.
The participants are serving different sentences, ranging from two to ten years, while three of them have not yet been sentenced.
Superintendent-In-Charge of the New Amsterdam Prisons, Ronald Hazel, explained that this is a Ministry of Home Affairs initiative, designed to teach life skills in preparation for their discharge.
According to him, next up is the New Amsterdam Prison Pageant and an exhibition.
The Tutor was Catherine Archer. She called on those graduating to be level headed at all times and resist temptation. “Action before thinking is dangerous. Honour your heart and practice courage.”
Reverend Selby Ross was the guest speaker, while the theme was ‘Efficient through Change.”
Earlier in the year, 15 female and 12 male inmates, graduated in Personal Hygiene. In April, 13 women successfully completed a course in Cosmetology.
The Principal Officer 11, said that it is not the end of the road for those incarcerated, since many are given a second chance at life.
