– Lowe continues dominance in female version
Joel Alleyne played unbeaten on his way to his first Men’s Singles title, while Trenace Lowe won the women’s version, when the National Sports Commission’s Independence Table Tennis Tournament continued yesterday.
Alleyne defeated national player, Nigel Bryan 3-2 and played against Hewley Griffith in a final thriller at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Alleyne prevailed, 9-11, 11-3, 12-10, 10-12 and 17-15.
Griffith had beaten Bryan, who went without a win, 3-2 in the round robin final. Alleyne told Kaieteur Sport, after the marathon last set, that he is elated about winning his first Men’s Singles title of any major table tennis competition.
“I just tried to stay focus and adapt to the situations. I am really excited over winning my first Men’s Singles final. It was challenging, because I am not that fit, but I went through,” Alleyne told this newspaper yesterday.
Griffith acknowledged that he was outplayed in the marquee encounter. “I went into reserve; he played good, very good,” Griffith said. Alleyne indicated that his primary focus is on preparation for the Caribbean Senior Championships.
Trenace Lowe also fought off a stiff challenge in the Women’s Singles game. She played Jody-Ann Blake in an intense battle that she eventually won 8-11, 11-7, 11-4, 10-12 and 11-8 for a 3-2 title triumph.
Blake had defeated Chelsea Edghill 3-0 and Akiecia Nedd 3-1 on her way to the final of the round robin competition. Edghill overturned Nedd 3-2 for third place.
Lowe told this newspaper that the contest was a form of preparation.
“This tournament is good preparation for the World Qualifiers in Guatemala in about two weeks’ time. I just used this as good preparation,” Lowe reiterated, adding that she has to be on top of her game for the world qualifying meet.
Lowe and Bryan carted off the Junior Mixed Doubles contest, while Lowe and Nedd won the Girls’ Doubles title on Saturday. Lowe also claimed the 21 Years and Under Open gold medal. The tournament continues on Tuesday. (Edison Jefford)
