The Guyana Beverage Company Ltd (GBCL) is consistently in the forefront supporting the development of young people through their involvement in sports activities. The company has been visible in most of Guyana’s 10 regions and despite the economic downturn, continues to render support.
Just about a month ago, at a press conference, held at their Diamond offices, the GBCL donated the necessary funds to facilitate a 40-over, round-robin cricket championship in Bartica.
Yesterday morning, at a simple, Managing Director, Robert Selman once again rose to his corporate mandate and presented representatives of the Enterprise Busta Sports Club with a sponsorship package to the tune of $350.000 to facilitate the Busta 20/20 Cricket Festival in Enterprise East Coast Demerara, from July 4th-6th.
Coupled with that, Selman has approved another $700.000 to offset the expenses of the aforementioned entity for the rest of 2009.
Such expenses include equipment for its membership and the general expenses incurred toward the club’s affairs. President of Enterprise Busta Sports Club, Karran Ramdhoon and Vice President, Jitlal Jowharrilall collected on behalf of the club in the presence of several other members.
Jowharrilall expressed profound gratitude to Selman and aspire to maintain, and encourage support of the Busta line of products.
Selman acknowledged the commitment while reaffirming his company’s role for projects of this nature.
He said that this is the second consecutive year that his company has decided to play a part, since he was satisfied with the general thrust of the project.
Eight teams will be vying for honours in the tournament. They are Enterprise, Lusignan, Enmore, Better Hope, Unity, Buxton, Clonbrook and Shivale.
The semi-finals and finals are scheduled to be played under floodlights.
At a press conference earlier this year, Selman had intimated that his company was deluged with mails from various organisations seeking sponsorship for their activities.
He said that while he is always willing to help, he issued such chivalry after an examination of the policy of his organisation.
He said that this policy permitted him to offer assistance to entities that focused strongly on youth development.
Selman is adamant that young people need all the support necessary to hone their skills and more importantly, stay on the right side of the law. Since then the beverage boss has acquiesced to numerous requests to support such activities that met the stipulated criteria in Berbice, Bartica, Georgetown, Essequibo and almost every nook and cranny of the Guyanese landscape.
