Twenty-two-year-old National all-rounder Christopher Barnwell smashed a merciless 104 to spearhead his side to a three-wicket win against Denver Greaves’ X1 in a feature 15/15 cricket match at the DCC ground yesterday.

The right-hander, who has played nine First-Class, four 50-over and three 20/20 games for Guyana, clobbered 11 massive sixes and 7 fours in his destructive onslaught on the bowlers to spur his side to 159-7 in the penultimate over after Greaves’s X1 had posted 155-6 when their 15 overs expired.

Morning rain had affected the pitch and reduced the match to 15 overs per side.

National Under-19 opener Trevon Griffith contributed an attractive 58, while Kester Harcourt (22) and Greaves (19) offered some resistance as former Guyana 20/20 keeper Tyrell Tull took two wickets with his off-spin.

Barnwell then flayed the bowlers to all parts of the Queenstown ground and consistently cleared the boundaries to the delight of the spectators and dismay of the hapless bowlers before he was removed off National Under-19 selectee Seon Daniels; well caught at deep point by Griffith, running back.

Barnwell’s demise triggered a collapse before Barnwell’s X1 achieved victory with 9 balls to spare.

Barnwell dumped off-spinner Denis Squires for three mighty sixes in his only over which cost 20 runs and deposited Greaves, a former Demerara Under-19 wicket-keeper who decided to bowl, for three sixes in an over which realised 22 runs.

Leg-spinner Harcourt, who took 2-35, was the most successful of the bowlers, but his three overs were also expensive, as he could not escape the brutal six-hitting exhibition from the belligerent Barnwell.
