The New Amsterdam/Kwakwani ferry service which was terminated nearly two decades ago will be reintroduced shortly, General Manager of the Transport and Harbours Department, Kevin Trim, has disclosed…
The Lady Northcote, the Transport and Harbours Department (T&H D) ferry boat recently taken off from the Parika/Bartica run, is to be reassigned to this service at the end of its stint in the dry dock for repairs.
Trim said that the wharves along the river will be repaired and upgraded prior to the resumption of the New Amsterdam/Kwakwani ferry service after an absence of nearly 20 years.
The service had been discontinued because the limited number of persons who travelled then had made it uneconomical.
Residents in the mainly agricultural communities along the Berbice River have in recent times however been clamoring for its return, saying that it will allow them to transport agricultural produce and other products such as coal and lumber to markets at New Amsterdam and along the coast without the current hassles and uncertainties.
The completion of the Berbice River Bridge was a major contributory factor to the reintroduction of the ferry service.
