As the Ministry of Health continues with its deworming exercise in the country, the Seventh Day Adventist Church, as part of its commitment to that programme, has donated of 18,000 doses of Albendazole worm syrup to the programme.
The medication was acquired at a cost of some $6 million by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), the relief arm of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
During the handing over ceremony at the Ministry of Health Bond at Farm, East Bank Demerara, Pastor Alexander Isaacs, said that this is the second tranche of a projected total of 50,000 dosages of the medication being provided by ADRA.
“We want to be on board, and give them all the help we can in this regard,” Pastor Isaacs said.
Health Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, said that the deworming programme has already been completed in Regions Five and Six and in the coming weeks, it will commence in Regions Two and Ten.
The Ministry intends to treat every citizen except pregnant women and children under two years old, to eliminate or reduce the reservoir of worms in the people and to avoid re-infestation.
According to Minister Leslie Ramsammy, the exercise should be completed by the end of May in Regions Two and Ten.
“This is massive because we don’t wait for the people to come to us, we go to them, and we go house to house,” the Health Minister said.
The deworming exercise is mainly geared at eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) in Guyana.
The programme was first introduced in Region Five, where the Ministry reached out to approximately 50,000 persons.
