Bartica Regatta Football tournament organised by the Bartica Football Association (BFA) and Bartica Regatta Committee kicked off on Monday night at the Bartica Community Centre ground with North and South Bartica defeating their respective opponents, River’s View and debutants Potaro Road.
Devon Elias and Kwesi Jacobs netted a double each as North hammered River’s View 7-3 in what was an exciting encounter. Kurt Welcome, Rondell Washington and Whitney Welcome touched in one each to complete the win and seal a place in the next round for North.
Scoring for River’s View were George Mentis, Terry Williams and Andel Norton.
In the night’s main event, South Bartica defeated debutants Potaro Road 4-0, Kenrick Wilkinson netting the first hat-trick of the tournament, Adrian Charles sinking the other.
Prior to the start of the tournament, the participating teams took part in what was described as a colorful march past and opening ceremony witnessed by Regional Chairman, Holbert Kinghts, BFA President and Secretary Carlos Prowell and Carlton Beckles among other high ranking officials.
Knights, was high in praise for the organisers, sponsors, participating teams and others whose efforts were combined to make the event a reality.
Speaking on behalf of the BFA, Beckles challenged all the stakeholders to combine their efforts and resources for future success of the sport in the Community while outlining the Association’s plans for the coming months.
Competition continued last evening at the same venue with Red Earth taking on Potaro Road and River’s View opposing Central Bartica.
Tonight’s match-ups will see Red Earth again in action against South Bartica and Central matching skills with North. Semi-final play is set for tomorrow evening.
The teams have been placed into two groups of three each. Group ‘A’ comprise of Central, North and River’s View, while battling in ‘B’ are Potaro Road, Red earth and South. The top two in each group will move on to the semi-finals.
Tournament sponsors are Pure Diamond Inc., CB&R Mining Company and Royo’s Mining Company.
