From all accounts it appears as though ‘Peace Fest 2K9′ is headed for success judging from the artistes and promoters’ responses at their press conference hosted at the Zoom In Hotel yesterday.
The Peace Fest featuring performances by Jamaican artistes, Jah Cure, Spragga Benz, and Trinidad’s Jah Melody, is set for tonight at the National Park.
As stated by promoters, the new venue (National Park) will be decorated to showcase the high-class glamour and sophistication that can be attained in local entertainment events, as long as effort is put into it.
Speaking at the press conference yesterday Andre Rochford of the Easy Events entity, noted that the Peace Fest is his brainchild with support from Gary Diaz, CEO of SSAGS Entertainment to ‘unite the Caribbean as one’.
He added that the suggested idea of white apparel for patrons was initiated since it is viewed widely as ‘the colour of peace’.
Rochford mentioned that youngsters look up to and respect the artistes chosen for the event and in most cases use them as positive role models. He added that the Peace Fest is yet another entertainment forum to raise the awareness of peace.
Rochford said that Guyana is being used as a launching base for some ten similar events that will be hosted around the Caribbean. He also noted that his choice of Spragga Benz stemmed from the fact that the singer’s very young son was shot and killed in what appeared to be an act of violence several years ago.
Rochford feels this makes him the perfect peace ambassador to carry the message he intends to get to patrons, since he was directly affected by a criminal act.
GT&T and Banks DIH are sponsoring the event.
As stated by Rochford, the 2010 Guyana Peace Fest is already being planned and a venue is already chosen.
GT&T’s Wystan Robertson said that the concert is an event with a difference ‘being a little more loud in its style’, which dictates that the promoters possess excellent taste. He said that GT&T is pleased to be associated with the show, dubbing it ‘a great event and a very spectacular venture’.
Diaz noted that he and Rochford began discussions for the show some eights months ago and were welcomed by the Hits and Jams Entertainment body when they arrived in Guyana. He explained that they adored the idea and had no problems with the choice of artistes for such a venture.
Jamaican artiste, Jah Cure, told the media that he was grateful to the organizers for choosing him above other Jamaican artistes to perform at the show, explaining that there were many other artistes that could have performed the same feat.
He added that his music is suited for all genres of society since it promotes absolute love and unity.
He expressed that he is on a campaign to heal the nation of hate and violence. There is need to clean up the stigma of violence attached to many Caribbean states, he stated.
Trinidad’s Jah Melody mentioned that it gives him pleasure to be able to perform in Guyana since there is indeed need for love and unity in the Caribbean. He also said that he is also engaged in spreading love and peace, which is of foremost priority. Spragga Benz was scheduled to arrive in Guyana around 22:30 hrs last night.
