The Government Information Agency (GINA) proposes to recall all media passes that it had issued to journalists for this year.
President of the Guyana Press Association (GPA), Denis Chabrol, in the wake of this development, told Kaieteur News yesterday that he was informed by Press Officer to the President, Kwame McCoy, that all media passes have been recalled by the government in light of the concerns raised by the GPA, over who should be issued with a media pass.
It was explained that journalists no longer require a media pass to gain entry into Office of the President or State House.
Chabrol said that the GPA welcomes the decision by the government.
The GPA president added that while the Press Association is not opposed to GINA issuing media passes for entry into Office of the President and other government buildings, the GPA will still embark on its programme to issue media passes to media workers.
On Monday last, Kaieteur News Editor-in-Chief Adam Harris and reporter, Fareeza Haniff, were turned away from the Office of the President because they were not in possession of their media badges issued by the Government Information Agency (GINA).
Mr. Harris and Ms. Haniff were at the Office of the President to attend the weekly press conference hosted by Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon.
Harris then maintained that GINA was no authority to accredit him in Guyana.
