It has been predicted by former World Bank Vice President, Ismail Serageldin, that the next world war will be as a result of conflicts caused by an imminent water shortage.
And even Guyana will not be spared from a possible water crisis, according to Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), Scientific Services Manager, Savitri Jetoo, if conservation measures are not adhered to urgently.
She said during an interview that although Guyana is commonly referred to as the land of many waters, there is no guarantee that its source of consumable water will not be completely depleted in the future.
She noted that GWI has been working tirelessly to educate the public on the ways of water conservation, a practice which is required by water users worldwide.
It is for this very reason that World Water Day is being observed today under the theme ‘Shared Water – Shared Opportunities’ with special focus on trans-boundary links.
World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22, as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
In fact it came into being after an international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED).
The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating March 22, 1993 as the first World Water Day. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater.
And so this year the United Nations has proposed that nurturing the opportunities for cooperation in trans-boundary water management can help build mutual respect, understanding and trust among countries and promote peace, security and sustainable economic growth.
According to Jetoo, the trans-boundary water notion ties into water scarcity and therefore emphasises the need to conserve.
The United Nations website has stated that 37 cases of violence between States, over water, have been reported. However about 300 international water agreements have been signed to appease this situation.
Guyana, according to Jetoo, shares a major trans-boundary river basin – the Amazon – which is 6,400 kilometres long, with Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.
