A robbery suspect who was being held at the Vreed-en-Hoop lock ups managed to escape some time in the wee hours of yesterday morning.
This newspaper was told that the suspect was arrested at a location on West Coast Demerara. Reports are that ranks in that division received information that the man, who hails from Agricola, is wanted in connection with an armed robbery that occurred in Georgetown.
According to a source the man was discovered missing from the lock-ups some time early yesterday morning after a police rank went to the lock-ups to make a routine check. During that check the rank noticed a hole in the ceiling, which the suspect might have used in his escape bid. According to reports the man who escaped was a suspect in a robbery, which was committed on a taxi driver on Wednesday night.
The suspect was apprehended at Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, a few hours after the robbery. Police had stated that at around 19:00 hours, taxi driver Roy Ramjawan, 25, of De Kenderen, West Coast Demerara, was hired by two men from Pouderoyen, to go to Princes Street, Georgetown. One of the men was armed with a handgun.
Upon arrival at the intended destination, Ramjawan was held at gunpoint and robbed of $10,000, the radio set in the car and his personal jewellery.
A scuffle subsequently ensued between the perpetrators and the victim, who managed to escape in his motor vehicle.
A report was later made to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station and based on information and description the police arrested this suspect.
