President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Colwyn King, has said that the Ministry of Education is obligated to stop deductions from teachers’ salaries as contributions to the Colonial Life Insurance Company (CLICO).
According to King, as long as teachers write a letter to the Ministry requesting that the deduction be stopped, the Ministry has to fulfill the request by the teachers.
The GTU will soon be issuing a letter to the Education Ministry in relation to the matter and, according to King, teachers have been contacting the union every day to query their policies in CLICO.
Only yesterday, he said, a team of teachers from Bartica visited the union’s office in Woolford Avenue, expressing their concern over the situation.
He added that GTU is still urging all teachers to stop paying their premiums.
Recently, CLICO informed the GTU that it cannot at this time honour any claims being requested by more than 6,000 teachers who have policies with the insurance company.
King had said that almost all the teachers in Guyana have medical policies with CLICO and when the union enquired if a claim made by any teacher now can be processed, the GTU was told by the insurance company that it cannot be done at this time and that the company does not know if the claim will ever be honoured.
“It would benefit them nothing…they might have paid many years, and they might have never got sick but at this time since there is no benefit forthcoming…we are saying to them that we cannot go and write and stop the claim, because they (teachers) did their deduction personally,” the union president had said.
Currently, teachers with the medical policy pay $272 per month while those in the family scheme pay $672 monthly to CLICO.
The medical policy covers medical treatment abroad for teachers, along with maternity and dental care among others.
It was also explained that some teachers have even upgraded their policies with the insurance company, as some of them now pay approximately $9,000 to $19,000 per month to the company for other insurance policies.
It was also explained that GTU is seeking other insurance companies in which it can have its members continue their medical programme.
Up to yesterday, Head of State, Bharrat Jagdeo, assured all Guyanese that their policies at CLICO are still valid and that all claims are guaranteed.
The President asked that persons continue paying their premiums since the company can guarantee all claims, whether these are medically related or vehicular.
President Jagdeo said that if someone were to seek medical now, had a fire or had a vehicle accident and his/her premiums are up to date, then the claim would be processed.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
