As of Tuesday last, the Ministry of Health had completed 10,000 vaccinations for yellow fever in Region One. This is a campaign that is outside of the expanded programme for immunisation (EPI) for persons other than children up to 18 months.
This year marks the tenth year since the yellow fever vaccination initiative started.
Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, is calling on all Guyanese who were vaccinated against yellow fever 10 years ago to be revaccinated, and even those who were never vaccinated.
At a press conference on Thursday, Minister Ramsammy said that in the coming weeks the Ministry will launch its revaccination campaign, and is targeting approximately 100,000 persons.
The campaign will start off in the hinterland areas that are close to the borders. From 1998 to now, approximately 400,000 adults have been vaccinated against the infection.
Dr. Ramsammy said that when the new round of vaccination commences the Ministry would not be as flexible as they previously were, as he explained that, due to the requirements of some countries for persons to have a card to show that they were vaccinated against yellow fever, some persons turned up to be vaccinated a day before their flight and expected to collect their card immediately.
However, according to Minister Ramsammy this will not be the case now, as the card would only be valid after ten days of immunisation.
Currently, 100,000 doses of yellow fever vaccine have already been procured and, according to the Health Minister, the ministry will try to procure 600,000 doses of the vaccine by 2010 so that the entire country can be vaccinated.
He added that Guyana has already received the rotavirus vaccine, which has been added to the EPI. This vaccine will now be extended to all children, and is intended to reduce the number of diarrhoea cases among children.
Dr. Ramsammy explained that diarrhoea is one of the significant causes for morbidity and mortality of children under five, as approximately 40 per cent of diarrhoea cases are due to rotavirus infections.
