…claim breach of agreement
Some employees of the Guyana Power and Light Company who are represented by the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) are contemplating strike action over a breach of agreement.
According to General Secretary of the Union, Kenneth Joseph, the agreement which the utility company has reportedly breached was one that existed since the early 1990s.
Joseph explained that for several years now the Union and GPL had agreed that junior staff would be paid double for working on the sixth day of a week, and senior staffers would be paid 15 per cent of their salary for extra work.
However, Joseph said some time in mid-February the power company indicated to the Union by way of a letter that they would stop making the payments to the workers. This information was also passed on to the workers themselves.
Joseph said that he immediately penned a letter to the utility company stating that to do so would be breaching a written agreement. The power company nevertheless went ahead and stopped paying the workers, Joseph said.
According to Joseph, the workers have since indicated to the Union that in their February month salary the monies for extra work were not paid.
Joseph added that during a recent meeting the power company sent one of its board members to the Union to seek information on behalf of the company.
“The board member also asked that we meet again for further discussions,” Joseph said.
The Union’s General Secretary added that there was supposed to be a meeting yesterday which never materialised due to some misunderstanding on the part of the power company.
He, however, noted that another meeting has been scheduled for tomorrow at which the union will meet with the power company for further discussion on the issue.
In the meantime, Joseph said the workers are contemplating strike action since they are of the opinion their rights are being trampled upon by the power company.
He said, too, the Union is concerned over the way the Guyana Power and Light Company has been dealing with not only this matter but other issues.
“The management shows no regard for any of our agreements, and this is very worrying,” Joseph lamented.
