The calls made by the Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and his equal in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy for a healthy population is being headed by hundreds of Guyanese.
In the mornings and afternoons, the National Park, Seawalls and more than a dozen gyms in the capital city are busy with individuals trying to stay fit and keep in shape for a number of good reasons.
Also answering the call is the Total Fitness Gym situated at lot 54 Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
Kaieteur Sport recently caught up with gym manager Videsh Sookram who disclosed that they have been in operation for about three months now and the response has been very encouraging.
Sookram, who has years of experience as a fitness trainer having been lucky as he puts it, to have training from the expert duo of Donald and Diane Sinclair, is fulfilling a desire to contribute in a major way to a healthier and fitter population.
“As a boy I always had the desire to become seriously involved in gym work and I started to gradually achieve this after coming to Georgetown in 2000 from Region One, my home town.”
Sookram disclosed that he was an instructor at Fitness Paradise, Curtis Workout and Zahiff’s Gym before becoming manager of Total Fitness.
Membership at this new gym has been growing at an encouraging rate with members being exposed to cardio, aerobics and general weightlifting classes and are overlooked by experienced instructors.
Sookram noted that apart from assisting male and female gym members to have attractive bodies, he also works with them on achieving healthy eating habits and formulates personal diet plans based on individual need.
He is urging persons not to only join his gym but to get involved with a gym closest to them since exercising is the way to go.
The atmosphere at Total Fitness he noted was family like since everyone looks out for each other.
“Since we started, it’s like a real family for example, when it’s someone’s birthday, we all would celebrate and have fun.”
Sookram said he has very good support instructors, themselves competitive body builders in the form of Marlon Bennett and Alfred London, while adding administrative support is Joneeka Cox.
The Guyana Amateur Body Building and Fitness Federation as well as the Powerlifting and Weightlifting bodies would surely be encouraged with the coming into being of this gym.
Sookram said he is confident that they will be able to have some athletes taking part in the Novices and Intermediate competitions this year.
