…one arrested
Joint Services ranks unearthed 20 kilogrammes (44 lbs.) of cocaine from a house in Ridge Village, Wakenaam during an early morning raid on the island yesterday.
The ranks found the cocaine wrapped in 20 separate packets weighing one kilogramme each.
The cocaine is worth an estimated US$100,000 locally, and would be sold for US$400,000 if shipped to the United States.
Kaieteur News understands that approximately 15 members from the security forces travelled to the island over the weekend, and during the wee hours of yesterday morning searched the house where they found the illegal drug.
The house was unoccupied at the time. Kaieteur News understands that the police were looking for a man by the name of ‘Red head’ but did not find him.
While information is sketchy, this newspaper was told that one man has been arrested in connection with the find.
But some residents alleged that some civilians were badly beaten by the ranks who conducted the search.
They alleged that a 17-year-old boy was repeatedly struck in the stomach by the ranks and had to be treated at a Parika, East Bank Essequibo health facility.
The lad’s step-mother, siblings and villagers were reportedly present when the youth was beaten.
Kaieteur News was also told that the ranks forced another man to sit in an ant nest while he was beaten.
