Competitive football made a welcome return to the Bartica Community Centre ground on Saturday last when play in the Bartica Football Association inter-zone competition got underway. North Zone signaled their intentions of taking home the top prize by recording wins over Riverain and Central to date.
In the first game on Saturday they hammered Riverain 6-2, Kwesi Jacobs opened the scoring for the winners after 9 minutes of play but Riverain leveled 3 minutes later through a John O’Selmo effort. The first half score remained unchanged as both teams battled to contain each other.
As the second half got going, Riverain found it increasingly hard to stave off North’s attackers as their defence buckled under the constant pressure.
Devon Elias broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute, Whitney Welcome added to the score 7 minutes later, Kurt Welcome added a double of his own ten minutes apart (69 & 79) with Sevorn Williams sealing the deal two minutes before full time from the penalty spot.
During the goal assault, Riverain were able to tuck in another goal through Andel Norton (74).
On Monday, North were in winners row again, defeating Central 3-1.
The players on target were Hamley Martindale (5th), Devon Elias (26th) and Christopher Jones (65th). Central’s consolation strike came off the boot of Colin Semple in the 53rd minute.
In Sunday’s fixture, a Seon Ferreira double piloted Greater Bartica (GB) to a come from behind 3-1 win over South who had taken the lead through a Steve Ramdial 15th minute effort.
But five minutes on, GB cancelled out South’s advantage when Cleon Adams rocked the back of the nets before Ferreira stepped up to nail his double (56 & 77) to seal GB win.
