Pele FC dished out a 4-nil drubbing to Victoria Kings while Conquerors sent Golden Grove packing, 2-nil, as the city teams continued their dominance in the annual Mayor’s Cup Football extravaganza at the Georgetown Football Club Ground, Sunday evening last. Konata Manning struck first for the winners in the 17th minute while Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant emulated Manning’s feat two minutes later. He returned to stitch in another goal in the 72nd minute while Mervin Joseph inflicted further punishment on the East Coast team 53 minutes into play.
Pele stamped their dominance from the onset, employing great ball control and efficient passes. This ploy, coupled with speed and aggression proved too much for the country team. Manning drew first blood when he broke through the Victoria defence and produced an immaculate conversion for his team to surge ahead.
Play had scarcely resumed when Grant collected a pass and thundered down the right wing and before the Victoria Kings knew what was happening, the ball was safely nestled at the back of the net. Grant later returned to heap some more misery on the Victoria team.
Mervin Joseph then sealed the deal with his 53rd minute effort. He collected a dolly of a pass and thundered down the left wing. He managed to evade all and sundry to register a scintillating goal.
Seconds later, an ensuing tussle for the ball among players from both teams resulted in Williams receiving a blow to his eye that sent the blood spurting. He subsequently left the field to seek medical attention. In the first match of the night Golden Grove was needled after Manasseh Primo breached their goal 26 minutes into the game. Thereafter the tussle for ball possession was fierce but either side failed to pierce the opposite goal.
The tournament continues on Friday 27 with two more exiting matches.
In the first, Buxton opposes Uprising while Alpha United and BV Triumph will clash in the second match of the evening. Kick off time is 18:00hrs sharp.
