A collision on the Essequibo River, between a speedboat and a vessel used to transport farming produce on Saturday evening last, has left one person missing and another hospitalized.
Reports have indicated that the two vessels collided at approximately 18:45 hours in the Lannaballi area, some distance from Scots Landing, an island located in the Essequibo River, not far from Bartica.
Five persons were aboard the vessel transporting farming produce, including the captain of the vessel, John Pollard of Lannaballi and the missing man, identified only as Budhan.
An individual whose name was given as Deonarine was the only person reportedly injured in the mid-river collision.
The other two persons aboard the vessel were unharmed.
The speedboat, captained by Clint Burnett of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, was reportedly taking a late night cruise of the river, carrying three persons, other than the captain.
No one aboard the speedboat sustained any injuries.
According to Burnett, his speedboat had lights on it as is required, but the other vessel did not have any lights. Burnett cited the lack of lights on the other boat as the reason for the collision.
However, reports have stated that Burnett and the other three persons on his vessel had been consuming considerable amounts of alcohol prior to their boat excursion on the Essequibo River.
According to a police release, the two boats were travelling in opposite directions between Parika and Lannaballi when they collided. It was due to the collision that Budhan fell overboard.
After the collision, the speedboat turned back to render what assistance it could to the other boat. Together, the remaining occupants of the two boats swept the area a few times, searching for the missing Budhan.
Their search was futile. After their search for Budhan bore no fruit, the rest of the persons involved headed to Parika, East Bank Essequibo, where they made a report of the collision at the Parika Police Station. The captains of both vessels were taken into police custody.
Deonarine, who had sustained cuts to his forehead, was reportedly taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), and then finally to a private hospital in the city.
Police ranks at Parika are still conducting their investigations.
