Traffic Chief Neil Semple has lauded the efforts of members of the Enterprise Road Safety Association for their assistance in helping to keep the roads, especially on the East Coast of Demerara, safe.
The traffic chief was speaking to this newspaper on Sunday during a pedestrian-crossing painting exercise on the Main East Coast Highway, which was organized by the group.
“The Enterprise Road Safety Association has been with us over the years. They have been one of the most vibrant road safety organizations in this country,” the traffic chief said.
Yesterday, the Enterprise Road Safety group repainted several pedestrian crossings from Strathspey to Lusignan.
According to the group’s president, Chandrapaul Persaud, the initiative was taken after it was observed that the pedestrian crossings were virtually invisible.
He noted that, with the number of school children relying on the crossings, it was only fitting that they be repainted.
Persaud said that the group utilized paint that was in its possession, and this was supplemented by more provided by the police.
The traffic chief expressed his desire for other road safety groups to take a leaf out of the book of the Enterprise Association, since road safety is everybody’s business.
He noted that, with the support of entities like the Enterprise group, the police on the East Coast of Demerara have been able to maintain the low rate of accidents and fatality so far this year.
