The Guyana Police Force has extended to March 15 the grace period for operators of minibuses to remove the markings on their vehicles.
A statement issued by the police on Saturday said that consideration was given by the Force Administration to the requests of minibus drivers and operators for additional time to put themselves in order.
Clause 14 of the Road Service Licence relates to the placing of writing, markings or drawings on minibuses.
It was amended to deal with the sometimes lewd drawings and slogans being placed on minibuses.
Kaieteur News understands that, although all operators of public transportation were given until February15 to remove from their vehicles all markings which are not approved by the prescribed authority, drivers complained that their vehicles are still being impounded for that very reason.
The operators told this newspaper that what the traffic police are doing to them is unfair, and they are urging the traffic chief to look into their situation.
The amended clause now states that materials approved by the prescribed authority will include the prescribed colour code and number, registration number, zone, seating capacity and destination.
Traffic Chief Neil Semple had told Kaieteur News recently that operators of minibuses and other forms of public transportation will not be issued with their road service licences if they do not comply with the new measure.
He also warned owners of private vehicles that they should not place unspecified markings on their vehicles, since these are not in keeping with what is on their registrations.
The new fad around town is the specially-designed markings on vehicles, some of which include large printed photographs which obscure the colour of the vehicle.
He had advised that, should a person change the colour of his vehicle, he has a duty to go to the Licence Revenue Office and effect change to the registration.
