While Derwin Christian’s 113 against Jamaica last Sunday is the first hundred scored by a Guyanese Wicketkeeper against a regional First-Class team since 1980 when Milton Pydanna made 117 against Jamaica, it was the second ton by a Guyana ‘Keeper in a regional First-Class match since then.
In February of 2003 Vishal Nagamootoo made an unbeaten 115 and shared in an unfinished century partnership with fast bowler Rayon Griffith who made 82 not out to be the last Guyanese ‘Keeper before Christian to hit a First-Class century.
However, Nagamootoo’s only century was not made against any of the regional sides but against the West Indies ‘B’ team.
A story headlined ‘Christian becomes first Guyanese keeper to score ton in 29 years’ in yesterday’s Kaieteur News gives the impression that Christian was the first Guyanese Keeper to score a ton since Pydanna’s century when in fact he is the first Guyanese keeper to register a ton against a regional team since 1980.
The writer of the story (Sean Devers) apologizes for any confusion caused by yesterday’s story and to Nagamootoo (who now resides in the USA) and his many fans.
