“Ah coming wid full steam this year”
The Carib Soca Monarch Competition is set for today at the National Park; and according to organizer, Nigel Worrell, it promises an entertainment fire never before experienced on the local shores.
Tonight, 12 finalists will battle for supremacy, but only one will take home the coveted title and lucrative prizes that go with it. Whoever wins the competition on Sunday night takes home $750,000. The runners-up will collect $400,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively, with the latter being awarded to the best ‘new comer’.
Those contending the crown this year are Melissa ‘Vanilla’ Roberts, Shellon ‘Shelly G’ Garraway, Roger ‘Brains’ Hassel, Orlando ‘Bonesman’ Johansen, Wilbur ‘Lilman’ Levans, Beverley Williams, Mark ‘Anaconda’ Batson, Tomeeka Thomas, Clinton ‘Passion’ Adolphus and the duos Reflections, Fireclan and Purrsonality.
What has been noted is that the twelve finalists have very good songs, and many have upped their presentations and stage techniques this year around, which guarantees a night of intense competition.
Kaieteur News consulted the organisers to have them send the contestants for interviews at our office, but to date only Shellon ‘Shelly G’ Garraway turned up recently.
While she has been dubbed a ‘very strong contender’ in the competition this year, the talented songstress said that her pulsating entry, ‘Work It,’ is set to ‘rake in’ high points on Mash Day as well as at the Carib Soca Monarch competition on Sunday.
Shelly G is not the least bit intimidated by her competition, since she feels she has the experience, stage ‘know how’ and feminine versatility to captivate the audience and the judges. Besides, this year around, the ‘hottie hottie’ singer claims she is more confident than at other years in the competition.
“Things are going to be much better this year. I am more confident and, of course, more aggressive on stage, which I know will do wonders for my presentation and my actual performance. I know the eventual winner is decided by the judges, but watch out folks, I got my eyes on the crown”.
Well, she is a mother now, and of course is noticeably a few pounds thicker; but, as stated by the soca sensation, the constraints of motherhood do not affect her singing, since family members fall over themselves to take care of her five-month-old daughter, Aneeka.
