Dear Editor,
Are there Laws in Guyana? I wonder. Today I am looking primarily on the usage of our roads.
It happen that I am on the road every day of the week, sometimes driving, sometimes I am being driven, and the amount of errant of don’t care damn drivers you encounter leaves you to wonder.
1. On our roads lanes are marked out at traffic lights especially, one for going straight, one for turning. But how often we find vehicles going straight use the lane that indicates turning? I wonder if there is a charge for that in our traffic law. That is if we have any.
2. Our vehicles are predominantly right handed driven and we drive on the left hand side of the road, and we overtake on the right hand side of the vehicle by tooting your horn first to alert the drivers of the vehicle that is to be overtaken and being given a signal from that drivers to overtake before the over taking is done.
I wonder if these laws are still in effect or that the rules have been changed to include overtaking (undertaking) on the blind side (left hand side) of the vehicle.
Again I wonder if this form of passing a vehicle on our road has become normal, so I think the law has been changed to accommodate this culture because it is sometimes done in the present of traffic cops.
3. Again it is my thought that if there is a build up of traffic on Avenue of the Republic at the traffic lights at Avenue of the Republic and Church Street, the vehicle should wait in a manner so that traffic along North Road will not be obstructed, but so after I have seen traffic build up with vehicles blocking the through way where there is no build up.
It happens quite often at the corner of King and Charlotte Street again at the Avenue of the Republic, North Road and it sometimes occur during police presence.
Have our laws for traffic been reviewed? Or is it that Guyanese have no regard for our laws?
During driving classes we were given five Cs and there importance of driving, they are Care, Caution, Courtesy, Consideration and Common sense. If drivers can remember them as the go about their day we will be able to change our road from the jungle it has become to a place of tranquility. Can somebody please attempt to return sanity to our roads?
I think heavily tinted windows on vehicles were put on ban. I have noticed a few very heavily tinted vehicles on our roads. Are they Guyanese or are they just visiting, the police should know.
