Clive Troy Elcock may have been two times unlucky or two times lucky. It just depends on whether one looks at the situation from an optimistic or pessimistic perspective.
Eight years ago, the 33-year-old man of Lot 75 ‘B’ Field Sophia was passing the corner of Smythe and Croal Streets when a car struck him from behind.
He was rendered unconscious, and when he came to, was in the Georgetown Hospital with a broken leg. He had to undergo surgery, and the doctors inserted a length of steel into the leg to facilitate the healing process.
At around 15:00hrs yesterday afternoon, the young man was aboard a route 47 minibus travelling along Durban Street, Werk-en-Rust when a black Toyota Tacoma, travelling south along George Street, allegedly breached the Durban Street major road and careened into the bus. The force of the impact dislocated the right side rear wheel of the Tacoma, which ended up facing east. The minibus also sustained extensive damage to its front and left sides.
Several of the passengers in the bus sustained injuries, but it was Elcock who came out the worst for wear. The man sustained fresh injuries to his damaged leg and was once again made to relive the 2001 experience. At the Georgetown Hospital, where he was taken, the young man was x-rayed and once again admitted.
Elcock said that he was initially seated at the back of the bus, but had exchanged seats with another passenger after she said that she wished to sit at the back of the bus. He told this newspaper that he was experiencing severe pain in both of his legs and was feeling a bit dizzy. Notwithstanding, the young man said that he is thankful that the situation is not worse.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur News was informed that the conductor of the bus and an 11-year-old girl had also been seriously injured. Eyewitnesses said that the conductor had received a slash on his forehead as well as injuries on his hands and legs, while one of the girl’s legs received a gouging wound. Several other passengers in the bus also received minor injuries and were treated and sent away. Among them were Jeanette McAllister, Michelle Duncan and Neil Sampson. They all complained of pain at various parts of their bodies. The police are investigating.
