Meanwhile, it was reported that the previous PRO Andrew Sam had tendered his resignation, while Junior Vice-President Peter Campayne had found it difficult to continue in his post.
The President also reported on the performance of the Union last year outlining its achievements among which included the implementation of the Strategic Plan for the first year, the continued receipt of the IRB’s Trust Grant Scheme, BOOST Coaches Exchange, the inclusion of Guyanese players on the West Indies team that participated in the IRB World Sevens Series in San Deigo, California, USA, the staging of a Referees Workshop, the winning of the National Sports Award for the fourth consecutive year, the naming of the Men’s national Sevens team as the top sports team and the tremendous accomplishment of the Ladies side.
Strategic Plan-
The report stated that the key performance indicators identified by the GRFU and adopted by the International Rugby Board (IRB) to measure performance in 2008 would have emanated from the Plan.
During the course of the year, the Women’s Development Committee was identified with Mrs. Marcelle Adonis as Chairperson and she attended a NAWIRA Strategic Planning Conference in Miami in September where the primary outcome was the compilation of a Strategic Plan for the Region.
The President disclosed that more information would be forthcoming shortly.
Constitutional Amendment
This project remained incomplete even at the end of the year and the President called for a new resolve if the document is to be completely upgraded and accepted for use to guide the affairs within the sport’s community.
IRB Trust Grant Scheme
This scheme continues to be the ‘bedrock’ for the development programmes locally and it is from this same source that local Development Officers are paid.
Coaching and Refereeing Training Courses resource and equipment and other materials are purchased. The annual performance reviews and financial statements, prerequisites for the receipt of the grant were submitted on schedule in August last year to the IRB.
Boost Coaches Exchange
The BOOST Coaches Exchange initiative experienced its third year of existence with the Loughborough University of the United Kingdom and remains a useful avenue for training and development.
IRB World Sevens Series-
Guyana had five members of the WI squad that participated in the World Sevens Series in San Deigo- Claudius Butts, Theodore Henry, Albert LaRose, Kevin McKenzie and Richard Staglon were on the twelve-man team that represented the Region admirably.
The report stated that it was a proud record and one that can only be maintained through the continued production of players of similar or greater competence, skills and commitment.
Regional & International Programme
The Union had representative teams in the following tournaments- Men’s Fifteens RWC qualifiers in the Cayman Islands, NAWIRA Women’s Fifteens which was hosted right here, NAWIRA Under-20 Junior World Trophy in Barbados, NAWIRA Men’s and Women’s RWC Sevens qualifiers in the Bahamas, while the GRFU also helped to sponsor a Guyana Women’s All Stars combination to Trinidad and Tobago.
Meanwhile, it was also reported that because of the regional engagements, local rugby suffered as a consequence and it was noted that a more vibrant and active programme, especially at the club level be organised this year.
Club recruitment was also singled out as crucial if the sport is to experience significant growth this year.
