Bandit escapes after shooting at police

A gunman fired several shots at a police patrol and successfully made good his escape after robbing a Sophia resident of his gold jewellery yesterday afternoon.
However, the gunman’s accomplice was not so lucky and will be a guest of the state for Christmas this year, and for some time after.
Kaieteur News understands that the victim was riding through ‘A’ Field, Sophia at about 17:00 hours when he was confronted by two men, one of whom was armed with a gun.
The men ordered him to hand over his valuables but became impatient and snatched a gold chain from the victim’s neck.
A police mobile patrol that was in the area responded immediately, and managed to apprehend one of the suspects.
The other suspect, who was carrying a handgun, discharged several rounds at the police and fled into some nearby bushes.
Since there were persons in the area the police were forced to exercise caution and could not return fire.
The ranks, however, combed the bushes but were unsuccessful in their search.
