Easy victories for New Amsterdam, Lower Corentyne branches
The jointly sponsored MoE / NSC / GCB / GTU Secondary School U-15 40-over cricket competition continued in the New Amsterdam / Canje and Corentyne Districts at the inter-branch stage.
New Amsterdam defeated Canje by 67 runs in the game played at the Rose Hall Ground in Canje. Winning the toss and batting first, New Amsterdam ran into early trouble at 10 – 2 in the second over, with pacers Judason Bess and Orlando Tanner taking a wicket each.
Jamal Henry, who scored a century and a half-century during the inter-school stages of the competition batting for Tutorial Academy Secondary, was joined by Linden Austin and together they put on an even hundred partnership for the 3rd wicket in 18 overs. They both fell in quick succession, Austin for 43 and Henry for 42. The rest of the batting chipped in to help New Amsterdam raise 180 for 7 in their allotted 40 overs. Bowling for Canje, Orlando Tanner finished with 2 – 46.
When Canje replied their top order fared even worse. In short order they were 3 down for 8 runs as New Amsterdam opening fast bowlers, Martin Weatherspoon (2) and Shawn Hosannah (1) had produced a mean and torrid opening spell. Canje recovered through a 4th wicket partnership of 25 between Brandon Balkissoon and Totaram Sooknanan and then a 5th wicket, 43 run partnership between Sooknanan and Quacy Kendall.
Sooknanan’s departure for 28 left the score 76 – 5 and despite Quacy Kendall’s 23, Canje’s innings folded at 113 in 36.2 overs. Bowling for New Amsterdam, Martin Weatherspoon took 3-6 from 5.3 overs, while left arm spinner Steffon Pilgrim finished with 3 – 14.
Over at Whim, Lower Corentyne were victors by 74 runs over Central Corentyne. Invited to bat, Lower Corentyne reached 158 all out in 38 overs, thanks to Berbice U-15 cricketer Shawn Perrreira’s 44*, which stabilized the innings. Merron Williams made 24. Central Corentyne’s offspinner Videsh Lall took 3 -23 in 6 overs and fast man Carlon Crawford 2 -18 from 3.4 overs.
Central Corentyne faltered badly against the spin of Lower Corentyne when they replied and where dismissed for 84 in 28.3 overs. Videsh Lall returned with the bat to top score with 21 but Shilendra Shameer, an off spinner, got 3 – 9 from 5 overs, Gudakesh Motie, national U-15 left arm spinner, took 2 – 13 from 5 and yet another left arm spinner Merron Williams, picked 2 – 7 from 2.3 overs.
