“Broader approach needed on issue” — Mc Cormack
In the wake of recent mob killings, the Guyana Human Rights Association has strongly condemned the actions.
In an interview with this newspaper, Co-President of the organization, Mike Mc Cormack, stressed that these acts are criminal-like activities. According to Mc Cormack, in dealing with the issue, there needs to be a wider approach. He added that the Guyana Police Force needs to adopt more prompt responses to such reports, since time is of the essence in these highly emotional scenarios.
Mc Cormack also noted that Parliamentary parties need to play a part.
Mc Cormack stated that, in recent times, society had even accepted the existence of a ‘Phantom squad,’ which he emphasised is not acceptable in any circumstances.
“People are choosing to settle their scores themselves, instead of getting the authorities involved, and this should not be so,” Mc Cormack said.
The GHRA head noted that he understands the frustration which citizens feel at times, taking into consideration the ills of society, but he cautioned that better judgement should prevail.
“While citizens feel frustrated, they should not take matters into their own hands. The proper thing to do is inform the police once they see strange characters in their community.
“Police, on the other hand, should try to respond as quickly as possible, so as to prevent citizens from resorting to apprehending persons themselves, after they would have given the person (s) a sound thrashing which may result in death,” Mc Cormack said.
On Tuesday last, a 42-year-old electrician, Hardel Haynes, was reportedly beaten by unknown persons in East La Penitence, at about 02:15 hours.
Reports are that Haynes was accused by residents of attempting to steal a television set in the area.
The injured man was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.
Also, back in November, the semi nude and battered body of an ex-convict, Rickford Barker, was found in a cemetery at Soesdyke.
