Police have launched an investigation into an armed robbery which has left a security guard hospitalized with a gun shot wound.
Reports are that 31-year-old Elton Belle of North Ruimveldt was shot in the left side chest around 22:00 hours Saturday by a lone gunman. According to a police statement, the incident occurred on Mandela Avenue.
A relative of the injured man said she was told that Belle was attacked as he disembarked a minibus for another passenger to exit.
She told Kaieteur News that as Belle exited the minibus, a passenger came out behind him and grabbed onto his gold chin. She related that Belle held onto his chain, refusing to let the man take it.
The man then drew a gun and shot Belle before relieving him of the chain, a gold band and his wallet.
Following the incident, the minibus driver reportedly fled the scene, leaving the injured Belle lying on the road.
Kaieteur News was told that the injured man used his cellular phone to contact a friend and was eventually taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was treated. Early yesterday morning Belle was reportedly taken to another hospital where he was admitted.
Meanwhile, relatives say while they are upset over the entire incident they are thankful that Belle is alive.
They listed his condition as stable since luckily, the bullet did not seem to cause much internal damage.
Belle was shot in the left side of his chest and the bullet reportedly exited under his arm.
