The North Georgetown District 11 emphatically launched its campaign toward defending the overall national schools’ championships title when the results for swimming competition were released yesterday.
The District that also claimed the swimming title last year amassed 304.5 points owing to strong performances from Stephen King, Accalia Khan, Shane Baksh, Ronald Rodrigues, Britney Van Lange, Henk Lowe and Noelle Smith.
Those swimmers were nominated for the Champion Athlete award from the under–10 to open categories, leaving room for the inclusion of only South Georgetown’s Tamila Sanmoogan in the under–12 group.
East Georgetown was second in the swimming contest with 237 points, while Upper Dem. remained in contention with a third place finish on 204 points. Bartica (168 points) and Essequibo Coast (93.5 points) sealed the top five.
A placement among the top two of the cycling and track and field championships should ensure North Georgetown the overall title but Upper Demerara would be keen to prevent that having already swept the first cycling event.
South Georgetown placed sixth with 71 points while North West (48 points), East Bank Demerara (35 points), East Coast Demerara (35 points), West Demerara (32 points) and Rupununi (32 points) rounded off the top ten teams.
Corentyne finished 12th with 24 points while Potaro and Siparuni ended 13th with three points. Essequibo Islands came 14th with one point while West Coast Berbice and New Amsterdam tied for 15th with zero points.
The cycling and swimming competitions were scheduled to resume at 5pm yesterday afternoon after morning showers postponed the early session. The overall points standing should be available today.
