Quick action by residents of Annandale saved a roadside business from certain destruction yesterday, as fires continue to wreak havoc on the East Coast of Demerara.
However, the shop owner suffered thousands of dollars in damage as a result of the third fire in as many days on the eastern coastline of Demerara.
Eyewitnesses said that they saw smoke emanating from the shop, which was closed for business at about 14:00 hours, and quickly raised an alarm.
Several residents grabbed buckets and poured water mixed with mud on the burning shop. They were forced to rip out some boards to get to confront the fire.
A neighbour with a water pump also joined in the fight to extinguish the fire.
In the end, there was no need to call the fire service, which recently came in for severe criticism from East Coast residents.
The owner of the shop told this newspaper that he was sleeping at his house, located a few metres from the shop, when he heard people shouting, ‘Fire!’
He got up and, to his shock, saw that it was his shop that was on fire.
He is grateful for the assistance rendered by the public-spirited persons, although he suffered significant losses.
There are reports that the fire might have been electrical in origin.
One man reported that the fire started shortly after power was restored to the area following a blackout.
