A collision at the corner of Cemetery Road and Norton Street at around 17:00hrs yesterday between a minibus, BHH 9734 and a Toyota Corolla motor car PGG 9193, almost ended in a fistfight as the drivers of both vehicles claimed to be in the right.
At the time of the collision the minibus was laden with passengers, including some school children. No one was injured.
The two vehicles at the centre of the controversy were extensively damaged and positioned on different sides of Norton Street after the collision. The minibus was precariously positioned on the bank of the Norton Street Canal while the car ended up on the opposite side of the road with damage to the front and side.
Peter Boodram, the driver of the Toyota Corolla belonging to Bharrat Taxi Service, related that he was traveling south along Cemetery Road and had just stopped at the junction of Norton Street when he was rammed by the route 41 minibus driven by Sherwyn Allen.
He said that at the time of the collision his vehicle was in a stationary position at the junction waiting for the flow of traffic along Norton Street to abate. He said that he could not be faulted for the accident since he was properly within his zone.
The driver of the minibus had a different version to the story. He said that he was proceeding in an easterly direction when he noticed the car in his way. “He just push out he head and I could not avoid hitting him,” Allen related.
Some women from the Norton Street area who said that they saw the entire incident blamed the minibus for the collision. The women were quick to defend the driver of the Toyota Corolla to the point of threatening Allen.
The women also attributed the accident to the careless way the Norton Street residents park their vehicles. They said that most times they do so in such a way that impedes the vision of motorists traveling south along Cemetery Street.
“Only the police can stop this nonsense,” one irate woman remarked. Meanwhile, both drivers were escorted to the East La Penitence Police Station as the police continue their investigations into the matter.
