A Grove resident was denied his pretrial liberty after he made an appearance before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton, on Monday, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, accused of having in his possession 65 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Dextroy Cordis, 36, of Lot 4 Grove Public Road, was arrested on October 16. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
He was represented by attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson, who in a bid to secure bail said that his client resides in a yard with several persons. He added that on October 16, when the drugs were found, about 30 persons were in the yard and only his client was charged. The lawyer argued that the police have a vendetta against his client, because he had another narcotics matter.
However, Police Prosecutor Desire Fowler objected to bail, and told the court that her facts differ. She said that the defendant was seen throwing away what was suspected to be the drugs.
The police officers went to where the man threw the item and they retrieved the cannabis. Bail was denied and Cordis is expected to make his next court appearance on October 27 at the Providence Magistrates Court.
Also appearing before Magistrate Octive-Hamilton was Christopher Connell, who on October 16 allegedly had in his possession, at Lot 58 Old Road Eccles, 50 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
It is also alleged that on the said day he had in possession one and a half grams of cocaine also for the purpose of trafficking. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
His lawyer, Adrian Thompson, argued that his client should be granted bail because of the “small amount” of cocaine that was found.
Police Prosecutor Desiree Fowler pointed out that the law stipulates that anyone possessing more than one gram of cocaine should not be admitted to bail.
The magistrate concurred and transferred the matter to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for Monday October 27.
