Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson has refused to grant bail to a Kwakwani man charged with carnal knowledge.
The accused, Anthony Melville, allegedly had carnal knowledge of a female who is below the age of 15 years, on January 14 at Kwakwani, Upper Berbice River. The charge was indictable and the accused was not required to plead. He was represented by attorney-at-law Rexford Jackson, who, in making a bail application, told the court that his client has a wife who is pregnant, and a three-year-old child. He asked that his client be admitted to reasonable bail since the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court only sits once every two months, which means his client would be incarcerated for a lengthy period of time.
However, police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail. Matthews told the court that, since the incident, the accused had issued threats to the virtual complainant, stating that he would kill her. According to Matthews, if granted bail, it is likely that the accused would interfere with the virtual complainant. The court was further asked to consider the seriousness and prevalence of the offence.
Melville is expected to make his next court appearance at the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court on October15. And a Bartica man was remanded to prison on a charge of carnal knowledge. The accused, Shawn Jupiter, on October 2, at Bartica, in the Essequibo River, had carnal knowledge of a girl who is below the age of 16.
The accused was remanded to prison and is expected to make his next court appearance at the Bartica Magistrates Court on October 29.
