Sawn wood exports from Guyana climbed by 32 percent in the latter part of September.
An ITTO Tropical Timber Market (TTM) Report has stated that the major destination continued to be the Netherlands, accounting for 23 percent of sawn wood exported over the period. Other destinations include Barbados, St. Lucia, Trinidad, St. Vincent, the UK, and the USA.
According to the report, log exports for 2008 at the end of August were lower by both volume and value than the corresponding period in 2007.
Other timber products, including round wood and split wood, have increased overall and have taken up most of the fall in revenue created by the decline in log exports, the report stated.
The export of round wood piles increased by 42 percent during the latter part of September also. These are mainly greenheart piles with some export of black kakaralli piles, one of the lesser used species (LUS) being promoted by the Guyana Forestry Commission with support from ITTO.
The major destinations for Guyana’s round wood piles during September were Venezuela (43%) the US (24%), the Netherlands and Bahamas. Burada is currently being used for the production and export of prefabricated housing, and has been exported to Caribbean markets.
Additionally, it is being processed and exported as timber and building components to the Netherlands, the report stated.
Other species such as Darina, Itikiboroballi, Iteballi and Suya have been exported to destinations such as India, the Netherlands and Trinidad, largely targeted for structural applications.
Speaking with Kaieteur News, Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud, who has responsibility for forestry, said that the positive development was anticipated.
“Our policy has been to encourage value-added exports rather than logs, as there is a greater economic return for the exporter and the country as a whole. This is one of the positive effects of the National Log Export Policy.”
Persaud added that support for forestry value-added activities will increase when the Forest Products Marketing and Development Council is launched in another week.
Incentives and other encouragements will continue to be offered for more value-added operations, thus increasing incomes and opportunities for those in the sector, Persaud added.
The ITTO Tropical Timber Market (TTM) Report, a production of the ITTO Market Information Service (MIS), is published every two weeks with the aim of improving transparency in the international tropical timber market.
