Rangers’ XI and Regal’s XI dismissed Rocky’s XI and Country Side respectively last Thursday night at the Thirst Park ground to ease into the final of the Banks DIH 15-overs softball floodlights cricket competition organized by the Guyana Softball League.
In the first match Rangers XI inserted Rocky XI who were in early trouble losing Skipper Amrit ‘Rocky’ Jairam in the first over for one with the score on five.
Azad Azeez (7) fell in the second over at 12-2 before Balbinder Persaud joined Asif Ahmad and clouted two massive sixes over long off in an over from Deonauth Deonarine which cost 16 runs.
The pair featured in a partnership of 109 in 10 overs before Persaud was removed by Riaz Karim. Ahmad then clobbered Karim for some huge hits in his unbeaten 67 which was decorated with seven sixes and four fours as Rocky XI ended on 126-4 from their allotted 15 overs.
When Rangers’ XI began their reply, Karim and Ameer Nizamuddeen started in a hurry and were very severe on Wasim Rahaman and Ramesh Rambharose as their team galloped to 55 in the first five overs.
The first wicket fell when Karim was caught on the long-on boundary off Ramesh Rambharose for 36 which included a six and six fours. Zaheer Haniff smashed three sixes from his first three scoring shots and utilized the sweep to good effect. He added 68 in eight overs with Ameer Nizamuddeen before Nizamuddeen was bowled by a beauty from Timur Mohamed for 51 with two sixes and two fours.
Safraz Karim then sealed the victory for Rangers XI with a six off his first ball leaving Haniff undefeated on 40 with five sixes as Rangers reached 128-2 from 14 overs. In the second match, Regal’s XI easily got past Country Side by 113 runs.
Regal’s X1 made 199 in their allotted 15 overs with Kapildeo Singh making an attacking 66 with five sixes and four fours, while Zulfikar Ali supported with 47 with three sixes and four fours in a partnership of 67 runs.
Bowling for Country side Sakichan Jagdeo took 3-24 from three overs and Riaz Haniff supported with 2-45 from three overs.
When Country side XI batted they found the going tough and lost wickets at regular intervals, eventually folding for 76 in 10 overs with only Jagdesh Deosarran showing any fight with 29. Bowling for Regal’s XI, Balram Roopnarine took 3-9 and Mahase Chunilall 3-16.
The final is slated to be played at Thirst Park under floodlights later this month.
