The Guyana Trade’s Union Congress (GTUC) has revealed that its former General Secretary, Lincoln Lewis has not gone in hiding after he claimed that his life is under threat.
At a press conference held at the Critchlow Labour College yesterday, Acting General Secretary of the Congress, Norris Witter, responded to a police release, which had stated that the police were trying to ascertain the whereabouts of Lewis since the reported threat to his life.
This statement, Witter said, has implied that Lewis may have gone into hiding following the experience.
He noted that the statement was damning, ludicrous and to some extent vexatious.
Earlier this month, Lewis had informed the media that his home in Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, was visited by characters, an event that forced him to flee the premises in fear.
Witter noted that it is the view of GTUC that if the police were interested in locating Mr. Lewis, all they had to do was to contact the GTUC or any official of the GTUC.
He explained that at no time did the police even try to contact him. “As far as I am aware, since Mr. Lewis visited Guyana, he has been in my company practically every day and nobody made an attempt even to contact him,” Witter said.
In the wake of the alleged threat on Lewis’s life, the victim has not made any official report to the police, because, as the former General Secretary had said, he does not trust the Guyana Police Force.
At a recent press conference, Lewis who is attached to the Caribbean Congress of Labour’s Head Office in Barbados had explained that he had retired to bed in the bottom flat of his two-storey house when he was aroused by loud banging on his doors as well as a window. Upon investigating, he observed three unknown characters trying to gain entry to his house.
Since lights were on around the property, Lewis said he observed that two of the men were wearing caps while the other wore a flop hat, all dressed in civilian clothing. After their initial attempt to gain entry into the house failed, the men left and Lewis proceeded to turn off the lights.
Five minutes later the men returned and again tried to force their way into Lewis’s house. This time, Lewis, realizing that there was no place he could hide if the men did manage to enter his house, decided to flee the premises.
He was subsequently rescued by a minibus driver who took him to the Stabroek Car Park where he caught a taxi and moved to a safe location.
Witter declared that the GTUC is concerned but not afraid because of the likely threat on the life and property of Lincoln Lewis.
