36-year-old Paul Smith, of Lot 88 Thomas Street, Kitty, was yesterday remanded to prison for allegedly having in his possession 33 grams of cannabis when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
It is alleged that the accused, on September 12, 2008, had the cannabis in his possession for the sole purpose of trafficking.
Smith was represented by attorney-at-law Patrice Henry. The lawyer told the court that his client is employed as a mason and is the father of one. Henry asked that bail be granted at a reasonable sum.
However, asking that bail be denied, police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews pointed out that the offence is a non-bailable one.
He added that the only way that bail can be granted is if there is a special need. Matthews said that the lawyer failed to mention any such needs. Bail was denied and the matter is to reconvene on October 13.
