Almost four months after a retired head teacher of Friendship, East Coast Demerara was murdered, a second person has been placed before the courts charged with the capital offence.
Yesterday, a 16-year-old, of Bladen Hall, East Coast Demerara, made his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle, who read the indictable charge to him.
It is alleged that on Sunday, May 18 last, at Friendship, he murdered Dulcie Trim.
Police prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that on the day in question the accused and another man went to Trim’s house, carried out a robbery, and then lit the house afire with her inside.
According to Griffith, initially investigators believed that the incident was just a fire. However, further investigation revealed that it was a robbery.
Shortly after the incident, Griffith said, one man was arrested and information led investigators to the teen, whom police had difficulty locating.
The magistrate then asked the accused if he wished to say anything. The accused, in tears, then replied: “Your Worship, I ain’t do nothing, Friday morning I de going to wuk and three police jump out a car and put gun to me head and carry me to de station.”
He alleged that, while at the station, he was beaten by police ranks who placed a black bag over his face. The teen suspect told the court that he was employed as a mason at La Bonne Intention, and no one is aware that he is in police custody, moreso that he is being charged for murder.
The magistrate then assured the accused that the police would make every effort to contact his relatives to inform them of his situation.
The teen was then remanded to prison until September 18, when the matter will be called at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.
