Burglars carted off an estimated $9.1M in jewellery, local and foreign currencies, 15 Cricket World Cup silver coins, 6 silver Carifesta coins and 8 sets of Carifesta stamps, after torching open a safe belonging to Mohamed’s Cambio at Lot 20 Regent and Hinck Streets in Georgetown.
The cambio is located in the same building that houses the Chester Fries fast food outlet, and a boutique which is located in the upper flat.
Mr. Shameer Mohamed, who owns the cambio, believes that the robbery occurred between Saturday night and Monday morning.
According to him, the burglary was executed by a professional gang, because the thieves cut the lines to the premises that would have enabled a security firm to monitor the cambio.
According to Mohamed, the burglars gained entry by using a blow-torch to cut open a heavily-grilled window in the top flat.
The owner said that the bandits used the stairway to enter Chester Fries in the bottom flat.
They then smashed a section of the concrete wall separating Chester Fries and the cambio to gain entry to the safe.
Once inside the cambio, the gang cut the safe open and removed its contents.
The cambio dealer expressed disappointment that the security firm guarding the premises had not responded to the break-in.
He opined that the security personnel should have realized that something was amiss after the line was cut.
A clearly frustrated Mohamed said that the company is a “total let down,” since he had entrusted them with ensuring that his valuables were secure. The police are investigating.
