A fine all round performance by Wet Indies player Sewnarine Chattergoon with 76 was the catalyst for Cricket power house Albion Community Centre’s comfortable 7 wicket victory over Young Warriors in the final of the Upper Corentyne Business Association/Berbice Cricket Board First division cricket competition, which was played on Sunday at the Crabwood Creek ground in the Upper Corentyne.
Chattergoon, first with the ball bowling leg spin, had figures of 2-23 from 8 overs to help dismiss Young Warriors for 182 in 42.3 overs of their allotted 43 overs after the game started one hour late due to a wet pitch in scorching heat.
He then returned with the bat to savage the Young Warriors attack in compiling a classical 76, his third consecutive half century to help his team race to 183 in 37.4 overs.
Sewnarine Chattergoon and his brother Harrinarine 10 (1×4, 1×6) started Albion’s reply and after batting out 5 overs before lunch to reach 27-0 at the interval, they immediately lost Harrinarine upon the resumption caught with out any addition to the score.
Chattergoon and the chancy Jonathan Foo 31 (3×4, 1×6) then put together a quick fire 86 that took the score to 113, before Foo who had a number of lives in his usual care free manner, skied one to cover.
Narsingh Deonarine 26 (2×4) then joined his West Indian counterpart and they took the score to 155 before Chattergoon went caught at mid wicket, this let in Ranga Lachigadoo (7 not out), who with Deonarine then brought their team home with out much alarm.
Earlier Young warriors after being asked to bat, fell for 182. The inform Paul Wintz with 38 (3×6, 2×4) showed some fight to the five prong attack employed by Albion.
Ishwar Singh with 17, Balram Samaroo batting at No7 (16) and Waheid Edwards 13 was the other batsmen to reach double figures, as the last three wickets fell with the score on 182.
Bowling for the champions national left arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul with 3-26 and Chattergoon 2-23 were the main wicket takers. Narsingh Deonarine, Muniram Lallbeharry and Davendra Bishoo picked up one each.
At the presentation ceremony, Albion CC were presented with$60,000 and the Upper Corentyne Business Association /Berbice Cricket Board trophy, while Young Warriors took home $30,000. Chattergoon was adjudged the man-of-the-match for his excellent all-round performance.
