A sting operation in the backlands of the East Coast of Demerara on Monday unearthed another hideout believed to be that of the notorious gang led by wanted man Rondell ‘Fineman’ Rawlins.
However, while the security forces managed to recover a number of items, it would appear that the slippery bandits have eluded capture once again.
Kaieteur News understands that the Joint Services received information that the remaining gang members had returned to the backlands of the East Demerara, after they were flushed out from their Christmas Falls, Berbice River hideout a few months ago. However, there were reports that the gang managed to escape.
The Joint Services has confirmed that they came under fire while on patrol in the Buxton backlands between Sideline Dam and Middle Walk near the central navigation canal on Tuesday.
In a press release issued last night, the Joint Services said that around 13:30 hours on Tuesday they were fired at by person or persons unknown.
The release said that the ranks took cover and returned fire in the direction from which the shots came.
It has not been ascertained if any of the gunmen sustained injuries.
Farmers in the Buxton backlands said that they heard no exchange of gunfire from their vantage point.
This newspaper had visited the village on Tuesday afternoon following reports that there was a Joint Services operation there.
Except for a funeral, there were no signs that anything untoward was happening, although there were earlier reports that a helicopter was seen flying over the backlands. However, the Joint Services in their release stated that the area was subsequently searched and several items were found.
These include one .30 Carbine (rifle); 238-7.62×39 rounds; 76 -.30 rounds; two spent 7.62 x 39 shells; two magazines for the .30 Carbine; one AK-47 magazine; one fragmentation grenade; a Bible; four camouflage hammocks; one machete; one blue tarpaulin; two black backpacks; two knapsacks; two pairs of boots; two pairs of rubber slippers; one toque; one tin CRC; two jars of nut butter; two bed sheets; five pairs of pants; seven jerseys; two black leather belts; one duffle bag; two pairs of yellow and green slippers; two cellular phones (Motorola and Nokia type); one small bottle iodine; 13 pain killer tablets; one large bottle baby oil; three toothbrushes and a toothbrush case; three tubes Colgate toothpaste and two bottles of deodorant.
Further investigations have revealed that the weapon found is one of those stolen from the Bartica Police Station on February 17, 2008.
