An early morning fire at Affiance on the Essequibo Coast has left the Ragnauth family counting their losses.
Reports are that, at around 7:30 hours yesterday, fire of unknown origin gutted the upper flat of a house at Lot 7 Second Street, Affiance.
The home, according to reports, belonged to former Head Teacher of the Taymouth Manor Primary, Boodesh Ragnauth.
While Boodesh was not at home at the time of the fire, his wife, Thakoordia, and daughter, Seema Ragnauth, were present when tragedy struck at the house. Sources say that the woman and her daughter had just returned from a wedding at around 7:00 hours. When Kaieteur News arrived on the scene, Mrs. Ragnauth said that she and her daughter Seema were having breakfast when her neighbour, Elsie Mc Lennon, ran over and alerted her that smoke was emanating from the upper flat of the building in which she lived.
She said that she immediately checked the main switch, but did not notice anything wrong. She then ran upstairs and saw fire coming from the middle room.
Mrs. Ragnauth recalled that, with the help of neighbours, she started a bucket brigade. Unfortunately, by the time the fire was extinguished, the entire interior of the home had been gutted. Mrs. Ragnauth says that her losses, which she estimates at millions of dollars, include one television set, four beds, one computer, US$2000 and C’dn$500, as well as an undisclosed amount of jewellery.
She is of the opinion that if the Fire Service was more alert and efficient, she might have saved a lot.
According to the woman, when the fire tender arrived on the scene, there was no water in it, and the firefighters were forced to resort to using water from a nearby trench.
