Government will soon move to appoint a new Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU). This announcement was made on Thursday by Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, who noted that the replacement of the CANU Head will first be an interim intervention.
He added that at this time he does not believe that CANU is “headless”, as there is currently someone acting in the position.
The Administration, he said, has examined the different requests and different recommendations made, and soon the appointment of a substantive head will be made. Dr Luncheon noted that the matter is under active consideration.
The former acting Head of CANU, Orville Nedd, was among nine ranks who failed polygraph tests.
Earlier in May, the ranks were subjected to polygraph tests as attempts were being made to determine the integrity of staff within that unit.
President Bharrat Jagdeo had stated that this is being done to ensure that CANU is a unit that the country can rely on to fight drug trafficking.
He had stated that, in order to expand the unit, he needs to ensure that there is honesty among its ranks.
CANU officers had to undergo the lie-detector tests as the investigation into the allegation of fraud at the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) widened.
The Head of State had said that it was the Commissioner-General of the GRA, Khurshid Sattaur, who had brought the fraud suspicions to his attention following revelations by the company Fidelity Investments.
Subsequently, the President said, those who underwent polygraph testing and failed will be sent home.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
