ALBION, CORENTYNE – The Region Six five top performers at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment examinations were honoured by the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce.
The presentation was done at the opening ceremony of the Berbice Expo and Trade Fair on Friday at the Albion Sports Complex.
Those who were recognized were Joshua Lochan, Hemant Karan, Melissa Asregadoo, Jenene Basant and Alicia Hartman. Each received a certificate of merit and an Oxford dictionary.
Each year, the Berbice Chamber also presents a trophy to the best graduating student from the Tain Campus of the University of Guyana. This has been running for the past two years.
On the top eleven list for East Berbice/Corentyne at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment, the Cumberland Primary produced four students, followed by the Rose Hall Estate with one, Friends Primary with two, and Sheet Anchor, Gangaram, Auchlyne and Number Forty-Eight Primary Schools with one each.
The statistics reflect that 43 of the top 50 candidates gained places at leading institutions in Georgetown.
An analysis prepared by the Department of Education in Region Six showed there was a marked improvement at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment, formerly known as the Common Entrance Examination.
Of the 2,941 candidates who sat the examination, 2,340 were awarded places at secondary schools, and this represents 80 percent.
Last year, of the 3,163 candidates who sat the very examination, 76 percent, or 2,393 of the students, gained places at secondary schools.
For those handed places at primary tops, the figure is 601 this year and 770 in 2007.
Overall, Region Six — East Berbice /Corentyne — shows a 12 percent increase in performance at the National Grade Six Assessment when compared to that of last year.
