A 24-year-old welder, of Adventure, Essequibo Coast, was remanded yesterday for having carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of consent.
The welder, Mukesh Das, and the girl seemed to have developed a sexual relationship some time ago, much to the displeasure of her mother. Who reported the matter to the police.
In court yesterday, the prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that children must be protected. He argued that should the accused be released on bail, he could influence the victim who seemed bent on a sexual relationship.
He told the court that Das and the schoolgirl had a secret relationship that continued even when the girl moved to live with her father, also at Adventure and not far from the accused.
Pointing to the girl’s mother, the prosecutor told the court that on June 1, the accused visited the girl’s home, requested some water and later relaxed in a hammock only to be joined by the girl a short while later. The prosecutor said that there was a sexual encounter on that occasion.
On another occasion, this time on June 29, the girl invited Das to her home and then left with him for his house where they had sex.
Suspecting that her daughter who had not reached the age of consent was being exploited, the girl’s mother summoned the services of the police at Suddie, who then took the girl to a doctor for a medical examination. Das has been remanded until July 14.
